Research
The Journal of the American Medical Association published an article warning that tongue piercing can result in serious health complications and even death. In one instance, a patient was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve disorder also known as "suicide disease because of the excruciating and dispiriting pain it causes." Body piercing and tattooing has become increasingly trendy. Government health officals warn that people can contract diseases such as hepatitis B and C as well as other viral infections such as HIV and AIDS when getting tattoos and piercings.

I have 11 piercings. I have 5 in each ear and my tongue. I would say by FAR...my tongue is my favorite. I was sooo nervous and then i got there, picked out the bar, they even let me choose the gauge, and i chose a 14. They took me to the room and washed my mouth. They marked me clamped me and boom done. It didnt hurt at all when they stuck the needle through but then like an hour after it was sore. I have had it for 6 months. I would have it done again if i had to and would recommend it to anyone. I do not have any problems with speech and singing hasnt changed. I had to learn to whistle again and "fart" with my tongue without my ring rattling on my teeth.
*Note about teeth damage...
If you choose to wear your bar with normal balls like most do, I strongly recommend wearing a plastic or acrylic ball on atleast the top becuase if you bite it, it is less likely to harm your teeth and in my experience it doesnt hurt quite so much when you bite it

This actually is a real risk, ive gone through 16 piercings including the tongue and each one has a medical warning that can happen.
But generally, if you DO take good care to not get them infected, it will turn out okay.
Posted by Amanda | December 15, 2007 9:51 PM
I hope you understand that you only stand a chance of facing these risks if you go to terrible studios who care more about money than your health.
If you go to a good studio and the piercer checks for important veins etc there are no risks, for example your tongue will not swell up so much you choke on it, yes it will swell quite a lot but not so much that you can't breathe, you can take ibuprofen (but not aspirin as this thins the blood) and drink cold water/eat ice cream etc to help with swelling aswell, (or just breathe through your nose?)
The needles used in a good studio are sterile (not 'clean', but actually sterile) and are one use only. you stand more chance of contracting a disease through a gunned piercing as theyre not sterile studs and the guns are not sterile either as they cannot be autoclaved because they are too inadequate a metal unlike the body jewellery used in needled piercings which are made of implant grade titanium.
please do some research before you make such assumptions

I was very excited about having my tongue pierced..it was a nice reputable place...first of all i have a high tolerance for pain but this piercing was VERY painful..on top of that it was put too far back on my tongue causing it too swell which made the solid metal ball pop back through my tongue causing damage..he had to than put in another ball that was one size larger so that it would stay in place without popping back through....it will cause you to speak a little differently but thats because you have a metal ball in your mouth that you're not used to..however i no longer have the tongue ring but my tongue is now permanently twice the size it was before i had the ring..think about it carefully before you go and do it just to be like some of your peers..it will cause permanent damage if its not done 100% correct!

I got my tongue pierced two weeks ago and it swelled up and it was hard to eat for a day, but the actual piercing didn't hurt too much. I talked funny for about 3 days, but its back to normal now.

i really wont my tongue done too but what are the consequences such as how long will my tongue hurt and im only 14
Posted by Anonymous | April 23, 2008 12:18 PM
i have my tongue done already and teh doesnt last long at all. everyone experiences it differently but teh pain doesnt come until after teh procedure is done. then the swelling last 3 days, 4 days tops. sucking on ice really does help, made my swelling go down in 2 days. also, your tongue doesnt immediately swell and the lisp is not long either. you can still sing or pick up singing, doesnt matter, i still do at least

This is my most recent piercing, and I'm glad I got it. Most of the danger comes during the healing period, which is generally why a qualified piercer won't pierce a young person. But almost anyone is capable of keeping these babies clean. But they do hurt, and the first couple days after suck. This is coming from someone used to three hour tattoo sessions. Bleeding, however, is minimal to non-existant.

i just got my tongue pierced 2 weeks ago and i love it ..it didnt hurt when they pierced it, after an hour it swells up.. after 3 dayz the swelling goes down, if you take care of it using NON-ALCOHOLIC LISTORINE or GOLD LABEL LISTORINE and drinking cold water after ever meal then your good to go
you do talk with a lisp for about 3-4 days and it really sucks when you eat for the first week so try noodles/icecream/soup i really consider getting one if your thinking about it..!.

Look, I'm 15, 16 this June, I got my tongue done during my pres, I live in Ireland if you haven't guessed.
They say it's deadly to scare you, it's only deadly if you don't keep it clean.
I recommend you to get Strepsils Spray to help the healing process, take it from me, I have 32 piercings, but all on my ears, 1 bellybutton and like the nose and shit, my body has built up quick healing to piercings, so I never get infected.
When every piercing you get heals, take them all out at least once a week and let them soak in a cup of boiling hot water for 20-30 minutes.
Just be sure to keep them all clean.
The same with tattoos, I have one on my lower back, and it healed perfectly without ink loss, I was lucky.
By the way, the tongue does not hurt, and you can sing, I'm the singer of my band, and it doesn't affect my voice in the slightest.

i had my tongue done last week. i have n inch long titanium bar. it doesn't hurt initially but it is very sore wen u eat n eatin is a chore whilst u r gettin used to the bar. just make sure u suck on ice cubes, icee lollys n keep a bottle of water in the fridge as cold drinks really help. as many others have said do make sure u check the place out. place i went to was great - she spent about 10 mins checkin my tongue n the veins etc. my swellin had gone almost completely in 3 days, i am lucky n havent ended up wit a lisp but it really does depend on the individual. also as far as i can tell it ain affected dmy singin voice

I've had my tongue pieced twice now, I got it pierced when I was like 16 ( a friend did it with the barbell only) and I had it for like 3 months, then my mom found out about it and I had it taken away. Then I got it done a second time like a week before my 18th b-day (by the same friend, the same method) I suppose I was really lucky nothing bad happened. But it hardly hurt at all for me and I took 2 ibuprofen every morning and one every other couple of hours for like 3 days and had absolutely ZERO swelling. Like I said it really didn't hurt. I'm ready to go get it done again cause I miss it and I'm older now, so I don't have to listen to my parents anymore and I'll be able to keep it in for good. I don't really know why I've wanted so many years to get it re-done though.

hey i got my tongue pierced last night and it didn't hurt as much as biting your tongue, and it hurt much less than my cartilage piercing did. the guy didn't use a clamp, so i think that helped to make it a less painful experience.

I'm 14 ,I have my nose pierced ,my belly , 4 in one ear and 5 in the other one and then my tongue
Tongue is the best piercing I have
Just don't play with it until it is fully healed
I played with mine the first hour I got it and got keloids.
They are gone now just took a bit of time and patience.
And also make sure you carry a spare barbell, I swallowed my ball when I was eating watermelon && Careful eating with forks because you can get your tongue bar wedged imbetween the fork!!

Well i gotten my tounge pierce about 5 months ago and it doesn't hurt much...its jus a pinch...i also have 7 other piercings (my nose and 3 on each side of my ears) and planning on getting a few more...i had my nose pierced the same day i got my tat (on my upper back) and getting my nose pierced hurted more than my tat...anyways...if u get ur piercing's done by a professional not will happen to u as long as u clean it and take care of it properly untils it fully heal...try to avoid wearing fake jewelry...NEVER use proxide to clean any piercing...while ur tounge is healing for the first few weeks use a mouth wash that doesn't have acohol in it and rinse ur mouth out with water after every meal...while ur tounge is healing dont stick it out much to show people...sticking it out some much during healing will cause it to split...if theres anything anyone want to ask me, jus send me an e-mail with piercing in the subject box... gtprincess89@yahoo.com ... i hope this helps!

this scares the heck out of me! im 17 and i have 10 piercings now as to the fact that I got my tongue done by a FRIEND with a safty pin! i stretched the hole myself with a barbell...its still swollen but not to the point of not breathing, and eating does suck but i figured out that jello works...oh and sucking through a straw doesnt work! moving your tongue from side to side hurts, sticking it out and moving it hurts, and the end of my tongue is numb lol. but i can sure move the barbell, and twist it around. the friend that did it just had his done last friday and he missed all my veins cuz i didnt bleed. but its a bit crooked, so not so straight. i dont recommend a safty pin because the fact that putting in the barbell after HURTS LIKE HELL! and if ur doing it urself, i could mess up or do it too slow which causes more pain. professionally is best.
Posted by Kylie_101 | May 29, 2008 10:13 PM
NEVER pierce it yourself!! physco lol . im 15 i got my tongue pierced w/out my parents knowing.. it was quick& painless i wasnt even scared. the first week was helll nd i constantly thought it was infected, lol but by the end of the week swelling went down& it was fineeeee. but my dad saw it, and made me take it out. this was like 3months ago. i got it re-done a cple weeks ago , i had no problem in getting it a second time chus its deffff worth it just take care of it & do whut the piercer tells you. ohh and my parents gave upp so i get to keep it this timee =]]

Hey all,
Here is some info for anyone wanting to get their tongue pierced....I have had mine done for 6 years. Everyone is different with pain, so be prepared it might hurt. It will swell, so eat and rink lots of cold stuff (ice cream, popsicles, etc). Stay away from milk, milk products, grain alcohol and smoking while it is healing (the bacteria in milk products and yeast in alcohol can get stuck and cause infections). Rinse your mouth out with salt water after everytime you eat, drink or smoke if you must. Don't play with it and be careful with eating, cuz i don't know how many times i bit my barbell while chewing (and it hurts).
Some things that may occur after the fact:
Your tongue may bleed while the swelling goes down.
After having mine for 6 years my two front bottom teeth are ruined due to the ball hitting them while, eating, talking, etc. They are super sensitive and about two weeks ago i put a retainer in so that they would stop hurting.
Yes you may talk funny after, but usually only if you baby your piercing (ie if you don't try to talk normally after you get it done.
Other than that just make sure you go to a reputable place to get it done...don't let your friends do them, cuz yes, their are lots of nerves in your tongue and one wrong move could make an entire side of your face go numb. take care of it, and just make sure you are knowledgeable about it before you get it done.
Good luck!

me and my friend are 16 we want to go get our tongues pierced sooo badly. her mom is going to take us...my mom would pretty much flip if she noticed it...im wondering after you get it done...is it very easy to notice?
Posted by Alicia | June 18, 2008 4:38 PM
Im 17 and had my tongue pierced for 3years! My parents have not noticed at all. Thats not to say yours wont, mine is very far back on my tongue. The piercer will pierce it where its suitable for your tongue and if thats near the front you could even have a lisp lol in that case they WILL notice eventually. Id say to wait till your 18..then its all bombproof
Posted by natalie | June 23, 2008 4:32 AM
i had my tongue done by a doctor, it was not painful but the healing process is a bit painful because it gets a bit tender when trying to eat for the first few days, i didn't eat for two weeks, i use juice and meal replacements and i also lost weight. so it is cute for style and you'll have a chance to lose some weight. But if you're under 18 please wait, i got mine done when i was 21 and still didn't want my mom to see it LOL.
