Many of us often wonder if the organic fruit and vegetables we buy and pay a premium for are truly organic. Thanks to a newly developed test, the unequivocal answers are coming. British scientists have created a test that can find the differences in the nitrogen isotope composition of foods. This new test detects chemical residues such as a synthetic nitrogen fertilizer in produce banned in organic farming but allowed in conventional agriculture. This is a great tool to protect consumers and keep growers and distributors honest and accountable. The only question is whether or not U.S. agencies will act on behalf of the public or the food industry.
